iampervert - in love with an undine

Photobucket

The man known as The Captain Kirk on LSD Experience, project jammed full of in your face aggressiveness and political correctness destroying themes, goes a new route with Iampervert. Instead of pop sized chip-grind crazy-ness you receive six to eight minute odysseys spelunking through murky emotion mines inhabited by stirring melodies and endearing progressions. It is hard to pigeonhole Iampervert with a genre tag. Sirona-Records describes it as "Witch Wave" and "Dark Psychedelic". Another suiting description would be "Power Ballads for Time Traveling Goth Ravers (who are into neo-classical synth punk)". Listen and find your own wacky description!

Syberia - "Drawing A Future"

I'll let you draw your own comparisons about "Drawing A Future" from instrumental post rock/metal outfit Syberia. It's quality musicianship and absolutely worth checking out if you're into progressive rock/metal and post rock/metal.

Black Antlers - Discography

I have seen the Black Antlers name around a few of my regular online black metal haunts but never managed to take the time to give them a listen, despite having one of the coolest names in that whole scene. The Torn Flesh Records crew dropped some Black Antlers material last night, so that sealed the deal - I simply had to check them out. Glad I did.

Torn Flesh has co-released the bands first two demos, both free from the band and Torn Flesh alike. Black Antlers is painfully minimal ritualistic dark occult ambient noise and raw as fuck cavernous black metal. Not easily digestible for those not already into such sounds, perhaps not even so for those seasoned listeners out there. But if you're even marginally into such things, you'd be doing yourself an awful disservice not even attempting to understand these releases. This is darkness as sound.

WSicko - Midnight Notes

Photobucket

Beautifully constructed Classicore by WSicko. The first track starts everything off with a slightly melancholic piano piece, quickly supported by strings and melting hi hats. The pieces contained within morph between neo classical flourishes and well crafted breakcore. The sounds and samples all blend together quite nicely. The end result is 5 tracks that fit in on the dance floor just as well as they do in a bedroom.

Adonikam - Adonikam EP

Photobucket

Sweet little EP from Adonikam. A nice blend of dubstep and other faster electronic music genres. 4 beefy tracks that will have you nodding your head and tripping in bed. For the dance floor diva as well as the bedroom researcher. 10 years ago this would have been called simply, IDM. DIG.

Wolveserpent - "Perigaea"

Wolveserpent have made a new demo available for free download at their website. Super ritualistic psychedelic blackened doom shit right here. They have a ton of other releases available for free download on their site, too, so get up to speed with what they've been doing the last several years if you're not already caught up.  But, yeah, this "Perigaea" demo is fucking killer. Dark, psychedelic, trance inducing, sludgy black doom metal. Great stuff!

Undergang - "Til Døden Os Skiller" / "Indhentet Af Døden"

Just found out that the ridiculous Undergang have put up 2 full lengths as name your own price downloads, which means you can have them for free if you want. After listening, though, you may just decide to seek out physical copies or throw a few bucks their way for the digital stuff. Undergang hail from Copenhagen and craft top notch old school death metal. Pulling no punches and kicking down doors, they beat your brains in with classic sounding death metal that has just enough of its own flavor and ingenuity to not get lost in the scrap heap. If you haven't heard Undergang before, fix up with these two downloads and thank us later.

Kid Presentable!!! + Morbidly-o-Beats - 72 Virgins and a Mule

Photobucket

Another release that happily reminds me of the kind of hip hop that got me loving it in the first place. Morbidly-o-Beats and Kid Presentable!!! bring it like its 2000. If you enjoyed Deep Puddle Dynamics and other such projects, this is for you. Solid stream of conscious rhymes over chilled out, Jel style beats. Seems that maybe Anticon moving to out west a few years back had a positive effect on the scene. LA is gettin real up in hurrr.

swimming with models - hypnautix and pork produx

Photobucket

The cat (or cats, not particularly sure) who brought you Greencarpetedstairs also have this fine project, Swimming with Models. Greencarpetedstairs appear on a compilation from the Chicago based indie label Fake Four Inc, that we posted here a few months back. This cat also shows up on the new Sole joint, A Ruthless Criticism of Everything. While the Greencarpetedstairs material dwells more in IDM sing song realms, Swimming with Models appears to be a more traditional approach to hip hop. Reminiscent of early Anticon/Rhymesayers crew shit from back in the day. This guy likes auto-tune by the way... like alot....

M-81 - "Astral Pilgrimage"

So this is M-81, a 16 year old kid from the Syrian Arab Republic, reppin' its capital of Damascus to the fullest. What we have here is a one man cosmic black drone project that is, to be honest, absolutely fucking brilliant. This is as simultaneously heavy and vacuous as you can get. It is punishing in the same style that all truly crushing metal music is supposed to be, but it pulls it's strength from - essentially - all of the exact opposite places most metal music does. This is a sort of negative space pummeling. The percussion of is off center and deliberately sparse, guitar feedback and synthesized noise swirl and create a massive sonic vortex, some brass is layered in there at places, and perfect sampling rounds out the deal. Just. As mentioned - fucking brilliant, really.

La Ville des Rêves - "Demo"

Single track demo from La Ville des Rêves out of Sioux Falls, SD, of all places, with some really wonderful shoegaze influenced post black metal. Swirling and sailing guitars of lush atmosphere and melancholic mood. Great musicality on this one, whereas so many artists attempting this sound go overboard in places or entirely miss the point. Epic, emotional, deep, dark - with just a hint of silver lining.

Barrowlands - "Demo 2012"

Portland's own Barrowlands with their demo from this year, offering up a healthy slab of Cascadian black metal that rounds out their sound with addition of a cello player. Quite epic and atmospheric at times, brutal and relentless at others. If you're into Wolves In The Throne Room, Fell Voices, Agalloch, Ash Borer, and the like - then this one has your name all over it.

V/A - "Relapse Records Winter 2012 Sampler"

Despite not fully harnessing the digital era, a lot of established metal labels are dipping their toes in to test the waters. The ever awesome Relapse Records has been on the forefront of keeping it real, in terms of physical product and such, as well as putting some feelers out with new media in the form of free podcasts/mixtapes and free samplers.

The winter 2012 sampler from the label comes packing heat with a ridiculous collection of material from artists on their roster this year, along with a sneak peak of what's yet to come. If you're familiar with the label, then you know what to expect. If you're not down with Relapse, I gotta question your dedication to metal music. Either way, cop this mammoth collection of free tunes including work from Pig Destroyer, Hooded Menace, Christian Mistress, Baroness, Weapon, Death, Dying Fetus, Murder Construct and more. Each and every band bringing it heavy and relentless.

In a word: essential.

Barghest / False - Split

Oshkosh Wisconsin's Gilead Media with a 3 track split from Barghest and False, delivering a sort of  black / death metal hybrid that tip toes into some remotely shoegaze and/or post rock feeling moments and back again. Guitar work here is of the shredding melodic black/death metal variety and of note, vocals are layered and varied while remaining singular, lots of crashing cymbals in the drums. Choose your vice to twist your brain and turn this one up really loud when you're all alone late at night.
