Hvíldarlauss Dauðr - "Through The Corpse Door"

Easily the most deceptive album cover in a hot minute. No, no this is not some chin stroking minimal tech house post bass disenfranchised future club retro pop. This is some black metal. If anything, it's a sort of epic/doom variety of post black metal. But, I mean, for real, fuck hyprefractioning, this is just some good fucking black metal. Any variety or type of black metal listener will easily enjoy this. Only just far reaching enough, just a hair away from being textbook.

Denier - "Thieves"

Super cult depressiv black metal, right here. Lo-fi and murky, sea of black vibed business. Three tracks worth by the mysterious entity calling itself Denier, side project of Layr. Available on CD or free download from the slick 11th Key label. Plenty of other sick material for free available through their site, as well.

PaleBit - 8L

This phresh and enjoyable new release will undermine any logical concept of reality you currently hold. Delve into some serious alien synthscapes from the mind of the AI.

PaleBit also did a remix for my upcoming album. Fans of bands like Yip-Yip and the underground central Florida electro scene in general should take note. As he just told me "i think its an alrite album actually, but only if ur only into noisy electronica."

Take a preview of one of the tracks and download the full release below...

December Apparition - "Sea Crypt"

Staten Island, NY isn't the first place that comes to mind when thinking of ambient/black/post metal varieties. The act calling itself December Apparition, though, proves that location isn't everything and that brilliance in any genre of music can be found well outside the geographic location most associated with it. Strange, too, for the metal scene, is the lack of an entry on the ever incredible Encyclopaedia Metallum Metal Archives website - but you won't find one there for this band.

5 tracks of brief yet haunting sort of ambient post black metal for free on their Bandcamp page is all you get, beside a Myspace page that looks to not have been updated in over a year and which shows the band only having 18 friends. Kind of fitting, really, I suppose. These short insights into the mind(s) behind December Apparition are a solid outing, though, and absolutely essential for those long haired smokers who like shit spacious yet heavy, fuzzy yet melodic, hidden yet accessible.

Robocop / Detroit - "Dead Language, Foreign Bodies"

I like Robocop. Detroit was rad when I visited. I also like forward thinking grind. Sweet artwork also pleases me. And when things are free, I'm overjoyed. So, basically, this is the perfect fucking thing.

ECHOTOMB - Error To The Throne LP

A tight album by Tennessee breakcore artist echotomb, whom I saw open for Captain Ahab in Johnson City, TN last year. A cool full length release with lots of interesting experimentation and extreme beat science!

Vinter - "My Path To Depression"

Solid depressive black metal demo from Mexico. Say what you want about depressive black metal; like any genre of music, there's something to be found in it that I enjoy. This one from Vinter is something from the depressive black metal genre that I found and enjoy. Proper melody and atmosphere from slightly fuzzed guitars that sound like they were mic'd on a 9 volt battery powered amp, lo-fi drums (might even be from a cheap drum machine, I don't know for certain), extended and expansive cave like growls and groans for vocals. It's all there for the right making of a depressive black metal demo worth your time to listen to. Limited to only 33 hand numbered CDRs, you're not gonna get your claws on a physical copy of this.

Swamp Witch - "Gnosis (Side B, Chopped & Screwed by DJ Dreemz)"

Chopped and screwed by DJ Dreemz, Swamp Witch becomes even more painfully murky and abysmal than they already naturally are, if that's even possible. Heavy, cavernous, dense - like trudging through a swamp in your dreams. Imagine that.

Law Of The Tongue - "Law Of The Tongue"

Hittin' you again with some more Torn Flesh Records material! Seriously, they've got so much great stuff, making it hard to keep up and decide what to share - also keepin' me from checkin' out metal material that's not on their label, ha!

This time around it's the self titled mammoth that is Law Of The Tongue with some six ton unapologetic stoner & doom varieties of truly rockin' heavy fuckin' metal. Toss in some southern/sludge tendencies and you're good to go with this one. Riffage layered upon riffage covered in bluesy jazzy metal drums topped off with a perfect growl and alternating scream vocal delivery. Sick cover art and brutal name, once more from the Torn Flesh camp. Heavy.

Battle Pope - "The Holy Trinity: Bitches, Dicks, And Gonorrhea"

tooth_eye has posted several releases from the absolutely incredible Torn Flesh netlabel, and for damn good reason. Most concisely put, Torn Flesh is a free metal netlabel, but it is obviously much more than that. With over 400 free releases covering the expansive wasteland of all things "metal", you're pretty much guaranteed to find something you'll love on this label.

This time around it is the self-described "evil incarnate, dick slinging, heathen killing, tyrannosaurus flex fuck machine from hell" calling itself Battle Pope. Easily the most accurate description of music you'll read this week. This is an absolutely incredible piece of attitude driven psychobilly southern doom groove punk'n'roll. Extra points for one of the most ridiculously awesome album covers you'll see this year with an album title to match.

V/A - "Sampled"

New Weird Australia has been featured a couple of times on Grindthieves, and for good reason. A sort of scholastic approach to sharing, creating, and pushing experimental music and art of all varieties, New Weird Australia manages to consistently deliver some really remarkable output that has its roots firmly in Australia's soil. While I can't say that I'm into everything they have released, it's safe to say I've been into most of it and that all of it really is spectacular for what it is.

With this compilation, simply titled "Sampled", New Weird Australia brings a sampling of material previously released on their New Editions imprint along with some rare/unreleased material from artists in their camp. It's a varied and wonderful listen of sounds covering a wide range of ideas, styles, and moods. Sonic experimentation at it's finest, both in creation and in experiencing.

Enjoy.
